One day at the heart of Shibuya Ward
Shibuya ward is one of the iconic areas of Tokyo. It includes the Shibuya business district itself, the fashion streets of Harajuku, the luxury of Omotesando and the culture mixing of Yoyogi Park. No doubt, if I just had a day in the metropolis, I will definitely spend it in Shibuya ku, which exemplifies the essence of the city.
Starting at the Hachiko exit of Shibuya station you’ll find Hachiko Square, a well known meeting spot, and the world famous Shibuya crossing giving you a flashy and noisy welcome. In a 15 or 20 minute walk enjoining the shops, lights and people you’ll arrive at the crossing where Harajuku meets Omotesando. Here you can choose to walk right in search of the luxury of Omotesando or go straight to the small streets of Harajuku to explore the boutiques, restaurants and, as tradition dictates, eat some crepes from one of its multiple shops.
You’ll definitely want to see some traditional sights, too. The Meiji shrine is waiting to fill the bill just beside Harajuku Station. After showing your respect to the Emperor, it’s time for some relaxation at Yoyogi Park. It’s especially beautiful during the fall season and really interesting on Sundays, when the cosplay fans meet near the station and pose in costumed character for tourists and Japanese photographers. Music fans can spend the afternoon dancing – enjoy the live bands at the avenue around the park.
If you have a taste for more, you can walk back through Omotesando and Aoyama toward Shibuya to find a picturesque hotel in the area near the 109 building – a department store – to enjoy a good rest.
